Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
Kurt Vonnegut was born in my own native city of Indianapolis. Growing
up, he was one of our most prestigious citizens — even if he did spend
most of his time elsewhere.
Working at a printing company in Phoenix in 1985, I ran into a girl who
had all of his books up to and including Galapagos. She loaned them
out to me, put into a big paper bag. I took them home and read all of
them in two weeks, all of them except for Breakfast of Champions,
which I had already read.
Thank you, Mr. Vonnegut. Thank you for making me laugh and making
me think. Occasionally, at the same time — Ha!
Incidentally, my favorite Vonnegut novel is Mother Night.
