Yesterday I went downtown to take care of
some business, and as usual got distracted
afterwards. It was busy in most places, with
yesterday being the de facto start of the
4th of July weekend.
I doubt this is the type of pole dancing
I normally think of; which is probably illegal
in public.
A nice old '51 Dodge parked outside of
the Satellite.
The first and second floor lobbies and the
bar at the Ridpath Hotel are my favorite
places for taking pictures right now. The
bar has all of these empty picture frames
suspended through the interior area. Empty
picture frames were sort of an old Dadaist
thing.
Not a very good photo, but continuing
with my recent obsession with windows.
Windows, empty picture frames — I think
for me they are symbols of passage.
This is my favorite photo taken to date
at the Ridpath. The bartender is used to me
by now. He's cool with both my little camera
and my Jack Daniels.
Back in my own neighborhood, I ran
into my friends Scott and Nikki. I've
known them for about eight years now, and
they are good people. Here's Scott.
And here's Nikki. I got a couple color
shots of her, but I didn't think she would
like them.
Scott and Nikki started fooling around with
my camera, and Nikki whipped off a sequence
of five of me that were all great. I guess
those incredible Siberian Husky eyes of
hers are pretty good composing shots too,
not just great to look at.
I had been taking some landscape stuff
before I handed the camera to Scott and
Nikki, so the camera was still in 16:9 mode
when she took the these. It is certainly a
very versatile aspect ratio, working here
quite nicely even for portraits. I can't
wait to get the new Leica with the
high-res 16:9.
Nikki actually got me to smile, which
has been difficult lately.
"Pat Maginess: Private Eye."
Thanks for taking the pictures, Nikki!

wonderful pictures Ed!I love your mirror pictures! I have many mirrors in my houses too…In NY I have a mirror I bought from the Russian Tea room when they started the remodeling back in 1997…In Pennsylvania I have a mirror dated 1915 from an Opera House.. I guess I like seeing my eyes in the mirror too! I hope Nikki likes her pictures and we can see her famous eyes.. Great friends ..The fedora looks great too !

Nice set of shots  I thought these cars existed only in Cuba now 😀

Those aren't mirrors. Those are empty picture frames. Of course, the windows on the door are defintely reflecting stuff. That Russian Tea Room mirror sounds very interesting. Maybe you could post a photo of it. I wanted to show one of the pics of Nikki's eyes, but I didn't think she would like those particular pictures (you know how sensitive women are) and that she'd kill me! :rip: — 😆

Nice tour. Nice photos. Nice blacandwhites. Can I make a suggestion? The Pat Maginess thing – I think it would be even more smashing if you cut the left fifth or so of the photo. And maybe in B/W too? That is if you don't mind my saying so?
ellinidata said:
I have to admit that the black and white does give another look …I hope you don't mind that I did want to see this in b/w too 🙂
edwardpiercy said:
Not at all, Allan. Suggestions are always welcome, especially from you.I might very well do something with that photo. Those were right out of the camera deals. There were only a few pics in this group that I bothered messing with.
ellinidata said:
thanks 😮 lovely eyes she has !!!She should show them off, the door to the soul should never been hidden or closed … nice !
edwardpiercy said:
Nice, Angeliki!I don't suppose that Nikki could object if I just showed her eyes in the picture. Which, now that I think about it, seems kinda creepy. Like something some psychopath serial killer would do.To hell with it! I'm leaving them up anyway! 🙂
ellinidata said:
ha,2 seconds difference… now I start to worry.. it is the forth time that happens btwn this post and Matts !
edwardpiercy said:
Hey Angeliki. I probably shouldn't put this up following that "psychopath serial killer" line, but here's that Johnny Depp shiv that I told you about. I've never had to actually stick anybody with my shiv. But it makes a really good letter opener! :lol:To Come: The infamous Pica Pole of Death!

It seems to be make in a hand operated loom not a machine.. Did I ever tell you I know how to loom ?? not that you will be interested in my artistic side any way 🙂

I just got a Page Not Found on that link.
edwardpiercy said:
No, that one didn't work either. You're just messin' with my head, aren't you, Angeliki! :devil:If you want to see the blanket full length, you can here. But it's kinda sad, because it has Baron on it. 😦
edwardpiercy said:
I got that out at college. This guy came and set up a table in the Student Union Building with all sorts of stuff on it. According to what he told me, the blanket was made in a small town in Mexico out of recycled nylon. They were $20 each or 2 for $30, so I bought 2 and gave one to my mom. It's an incredibly warm blanket, even warmer than a thermal blanket, and all I need in the winter. Now what it's still doing on my bed in the Summer, well, I really don't know — I just push it down. You can wash them in the machine, but they have to air dry or they kind of crinkle (My mom accidently did that with hers.)Okay, now I'm off to check out that link.
ellinidata said:
I did mess up Ed, 😦 see you emails ….I am not sad to see Baron, he is special to me and you know it. I am glad I got to know about him when he was alive. thanks for the link 🙂

I love the idea of the picture frames. I've had this plan for a couple of years to attach some to the block wall surrounding my backyard. One or two I might paint a pic inside it…..or maybe not.Quite a few in my collection of Goodwill frame purchases are pretty beat up. I also have a couple of old door frames and gates that I might attach to the wall as well. Not sure if I should coat them with varnish to protect them or just let them slowly fall apart from the sun and heat in Arizona. It'd be like my very own installation piece. Hmmmm…..maybe I should charge admission to my backyard. I think the pic of you w/ the cig should be on the cover of your next book. p.s. Speaking of Johnny Depp…..Oh what can I say….I have a few pics of him in my 'favorite actors'. Pam

Noah Counte (aka Matthew) lives in Bloomington, I believe. You can find his blog on my sidebar.
edwardpiercy said:
Oh no! :lol:I've been thinking about it, and I think I like the original photo best. I did do this one, keeping the 16:9 and letting it wash out. I think that aspect gives it a kind of spaciousness. As well as a movie still aspect — you know how I am about movies and celebs. Well here I am, NOT Johnny, but "as I am…all or not at all."

I can't say I love cold weather or snow…..cooler weather would be nice though. Both my daughters live in cold country…one in North Dakota and the other in Illinois. I miss them terribly but know they will never move back to the heat. I am used to it, I guess, having lived here since 1950. I was born in the midwest, Indiana, but moved to Phoenix when I was two.I'm planning a trip to Bloomington for next year. I have many cousins back there I would like to meet plus the man who helped me in my search for a 'lost sister'. It just so happened, this man lived next door to a cousin of mine and his best friend is a cousin of mine too. Small world.Yeah, the heat here gets to the best of us. So far, we've had 17 days of 110 or higher and the summer has only just begun.:faint: Usually, there are only 10 days of the higher temps during the whole summer.

@ Pam. Sounds like some interesting ideas with the picture frames. Arizona, huh. I lived in Phoenix-Tempe from 1985 to 1988. I liked it back then. But there's no way I would like all the heat these days. I'm a winter guy in this phase in my life. I love cold weather, snow.

Well, perhaps there is a prize. I was talking to my sister yesterday, who is also a big JD fan, and she told me this one from GQ was her own personal favorite.

Pam, there are various ways to embed a photo I think. Here's the way I do it. First, you create a folder in your My Account >> Files called "files". Then you upload the photo into the files folder. Then, you hand-code the path into the Comment. I can't give you the thing directly or of course it would translate into a photo, but if you click on "EDIT" in your Comment above you can see exactly what to type in. And of course you will have to change "edwardpiercy" to your account name. It's kind of a pain in the ass, actually. 😦 If you have any problems/questions, feel free.

Yes, Ed, that is my fave pic of you. Of course, the one of you smiling is cute too. There is something about B & W photos that are so appealing. It sorta takes you back to the 20's, 30's and 40's. The movie industry, I think, made a big mistake by colorizing some of the old movies. My fave pic of Depp is of him painting. I don't know how to attach it here, otherwise, I would. Can't remember where I found it.
edwardpiercy said:
Thanks! I'm sure Angeliki (or my sister) will love it.

thanks both!

B&W photos bring to surface what we really see and sometimes tells a story of the observer/photographer. Colors are nice but sometimes are obstacle to what photographer really want to emphasize. Not a good example but take a look at these photos, actually the same photo but in B&W and color version. The last one in my post:http://my.opera.com/gdare/blog/2007/10/28/falland in my photo album:http://my.opera.com/gdare/albums/showpic.dml?album=285132&picture=5573247

"B&W photos bring to surface what we really see and sometimes tells a story of the observer/photographer. The same w/ Ed's picture. If I were to paint his portrait, I'd use the one w/ the red fence in the background, but for a photo portrait, I'd take the B&W.

Interesting observations, but I'm not convinced that black and white photography has more merit than color photography. It serves a different aesthetic, but does not necessarily lead to more meaningful photographs. I like both, personally. 🙂 Far more important is the artist behind the shot.
edwardpiercy said:
My own theory is that BW provides a more unified emotional experience. Color a more diverse one. And you are very right, Richard, it's really the photographer behind the shot.
gdare said:
I was never an artist but I always liked photography with meaning or with hidden message in it. And if there is message, it is sent stronger through B&W photograph.Just my opinion, though 🙂
