Dr. Stephen Murray in the SHH hybrid operating room.
This is the coolest thing I've ever seen on this planet.
While I was at the doctor's last week I ran across an
article on Sacred Heart Hospital's new (and 3rd) robotic
surgery system, the daVinci Si. The daVinci is a state-
of-the-art robotic tool which helps surgeons perform
complex micro-surgery procedures. The addition of the
new Si unit makes Sacred Heart's hybrid operating room
the best in the western United States.
Some on the internet have made jokes about how with
robotic surgery there is no more need for doctors,
only people who can play video games. Nothing could
be further from the truth. Having a good word processor
does not create a great novel without the mind and craft
of the writer. Just so the daVinci system gives skilled
surgeons the ability to choose and perform minimally
invasive surgery over more traditional invasive surgeries.
If you've ever had your sternum cut in two with a saw
and then wired back together again, you will know the
advantage of micro-surgery. And in some cases the improved
view made possible by the system's 3D HD imaging system
brings a greater chance of success for such procedures
such as mitral valve repair over more traditional means.
There have been huge advances in medical science over
the past 50 years. And what is experimental today becomes
the commonplace in a few short years. So if right now the
daVinci system seems like something out of Star Trek:
Next Generation, in future years patients won't even
bat an eye at the thought of such techniques.
Would I agree to be operated on in my upcoming valve
surgery using such a system?
Hells yeah I would!

So ein Ding müssen wir auch haben!
Ah yes. Like Allan's new cell phone? Ha!:DEs muss sein!
holly crap! this looks like a space station!I need to go for an inspection but I am not done here…"I'll be back!"*hugs*
It would be cool to hear HAL9000 talk with a surgeon about what has to be done with a patient 😎
:lol:Oh sure! Blame it all on PC users! :pHere's one I caught too when I was viewing your link.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1CUwDtkM8M&feature=relatedYou know that makes me think maybe there should be an XXX porn version. "You know I have always had the greatest admiration for your buttocks, Dave. Perhaps we might meet in the pod bay and…":p

@ Darko."I think you are feeling a bit low, Ed. You really ought to lay down on this table and let me see what the matter is.":p@ Angeliki.Okie dokie! *hugs back*
😆 😆
Back in the 90s when I was editor of this fancy magazine one of the lay-outers had a HAL voice on his computer, welcoming him every time it went from stand-by mode. One of the other guys and me decided to make a joke with him, and without him knowing it we installed this grinning goblin voice in stead of HAL on his unit. It would break into a really irritating high pitched giggling which lasted for several minutes. As addition we programmed it to do the same every time he did a typo. It was great fun, because even though he was always bragging about his computer skills it took him an entire week to uninstall the grinning goblin. Not that this has anything to do with surgery, but there you have it anyway.
I would too … but I still prefer the thought of no operation needed … very informative post, Ed 🙂
@ Dirk. Hey, Dirk. 🙂 How's the married life? Are you back yet? Ah, never mind I'll stop by your blog and find out. :up:My aim is to inform…and yet delight. :p
😀 yes, I'm back in Germany … and married life … so far … hm, very special :p
Why Martin, I am shocked at your behavior! Pleased, but shocked!:D
Thank you! :heart:Bad news, thoough. the esophageal echocardiogram Dr. Fuhs did yesterday showed that in spite of all the repeated testing across the years that they discovered 2 things wrong with my heart that they never knew about — a hole in my heart like the one I had when I was born but in the atrial area; and something wrong with one of the tube thingies that goes into one of my lungs. So instead of the valve thing there are now more things to be fixed. Dr. Fuhs told me that after I see Dr. Garabedian next month that he would get together with Dr. Goldberg and Dr. Garabediam and they would have a conference and decide what to do about all this. Kinda disppointed really. I was really excited about having my valve surgery maybe in July. And now I just don't know how it's going to all play out. Well anyway that's all the news about that stuff. Good news is that is was only like 55 F here today. Yeeeehaaaa!:)
since I returned I am watching HAL videos! you all are to be blamed! 😮 I cover my ears when the f* word is said… still very enjoyable!:lol:Eddie,I never wanted to be a surgeon. Despite of the money these people make, their services are enormous! God bless them all!I know you are thinking of the operation daily and despite of the post entries your trust to your personal doctor will pay back! I just know it in my heart… it all will be fine 🙂
Well unfortunately my mom was there with me. In any case, my understanding was that every technique is different. I've had about 30 regular echocardiograms over the years to monitor everything. And most things show up it. But sometimes things can hide/be blocked I guess. The esophageal method goes in from a slightly different angle and can see different things. Anyway, I don't blame my doctors at all. They are top notch.

Better to know than to have the surgery and then you need to go back for the additional repairs! It might be better to fix all together ,no?I was thinking of you and the test you had yesterday. I knew about it and I did pray that you will not have a hard time afterwards…Stay strong eddie,tr not to share too much info with your mom… she must be very worried!
Ah and that is Evan with her! I know because my mom watches it too. :p
we are OK Eddie, every day with teens is a challenge but we count our blessings and try to ignore the hardships :)no family is perfect, life is a bitch but "giving up" is not part of our vocabulary, no?please hug your mom for me,as a mother myself I can feel her concerns…on a happier note,I did watch dancing with the stars tonight and the redhead dancer (Anna) is moving on to the finals! I was thinking of you and your love for readheads! :yes:article of tonights results:http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2010/05/dancing-with-the-stars-four-scored.htmlimage: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6a00d8341c630a53ef0133edd5c9a9970b-pi
they are amazing! if you feel like it watch with your mom the finals next week! All of them are very very good!
PS.Thanks for the support. Except for mom I don't have anyone anymore to talk to about this stuff. I hope you and yours are fantastic!
Pretty cool surgical technology. Amazing stuff.I'm with Angeliki on this: It's good that they've found the other things before going in. Maybe they'll be able to get them all at once, and you'll only have to think about one surgery and one recovery.
That would certainly be ideal Star. I don't know about safety issues doing all of them. I guess I'll find out when they have their conference. BTW I hope to have Dr. Lowe, my new primary care doctor, at the conference too. She is my "Big Picture" doc and advocate. :up:Hope you are having a great night!
Edward, I believe they have something like that Da Vinci thing in one of our hospitals here. I remember hearing about it on the news a year or so ago. I'll have to look into that and see what it's about. I just know they do robotic surgery here and that's all I know. Kind of eerie to think about, but I wouldn't be scared to have it used on me—-I think. I'm glad they found these other problems. What if they had gone in to do the valve job and had these other two things pop up to interfere or complicate the surgery they had already planned? Maybe excessive bleeding or something like that. Now they can figure out how to approach this surgery. If you have to have more than one surgery…..well, you'll come through one or all of them with flying colors. I am going to talk to THE MAN about that.
Linda that is all true. Better now than when they have me opened up. I thank you for your wishes and please tell The Man that even though I hope to visit him, that I'd just as soon not visit him in the next 4 months or so. 🙂
Will certainly ask, Edward.
