I've always considered myself to be a conservative
and safety conscious driver. But I have to admit
that through the years of keeping an eye out for
hazards that I never would have expected this one.
Yesterday a couple was driving down I-405 near Kirkland,
Washington when suddenly a large pickaxe came flying
through the windshield of their Mercedes. Evidently the
pickaxe flew out of the bed of an as yet unidentified
pick-up truck driving in the opposite direction.
Neither passenger was hurt. But I imagine that their
nerves were frayed for a good long while afterwards.
Actually, I have no idea how air currents could lift
a big pickaxe out of a truck and propel it that far.
I guess I'll have to ask an engineer. Next time I
happen to be sitting next to one.
