My mom's bed has been falling down lately due to the
fact that the metal side frame kept edging out from the
bottom slats, which then would fall and cause the mattress
to collapse onto the floor. I had tried working on it before
by tightening all the bolts, but they were all pretty much
stripped. So yesterday me and my sister took a trip up to
the Lowe's Home Supply on North Division to get some new
bolts. We had a nice day for it — cool and at least at
that point not too sunny.
Right off the bat my sister got hungry. So we stopped
at the Carl's Jr. burger place across from Lowe's and
ate lunch. I was going to save this photo for my upcoming
crappy but tasty food post, but decided that compared
to what I am going to do on that one that Carl's Jr.
is actually a bit too "upscale."
When we finally got to Lowe's we went through tons of
various screws, nuts and bolts, etc. My sister, who used
to be in the building supply trade, finally found the
exact size and gauge we were looking for. After that we
looked at carpets, as I want to replace my old rug in the
living room which is now 14 years old and in not too good
of shape. I didn't find any that were a perfect stylistic
match to my walls and furniture, but I did find one that
was cheap and might be acceptable. But that will have to
come some months up the road.
Once home we rested a bit and then took the mattresses
off the bed and took the old bolts out of the frame and
put in the new ones. My old collet screwdriver kept
screwing up and I put a new one on my Christmas wish-list.
I don't use it all that often, but that's the kind of thing
you have to have when you need it. I also had to keep
changing out the screwdriver tip, as the old bolts had
hexagonal heads and the new ones had Phillips heads.
It got to be 4:58 at that point and for a minute we
considered leaving everything a mess until the next
day and going to get a beer like real construction
guys do. But then we thought, nah, we're not getting
paid for this so let's just finish it. It took about an
hour to complete the project. Our legs afterward were
very sore from squatting.

😆 you know I don't think I did a Christmas Wish List post last year. 😦 Anyway, hope I get a new screwdriver from Santa. So do already have something on your wish list? :pI think the bolt does have a beauty. Didn't Andy Warhol do a bolt once? Well I don't know but I know my sister just loves that stuff. And oh Kat saw an Abyssian cat at the pet store down the street from Lowes. I know she fell in love with it and wanted to take it home! But that will be a few months down the road when she doesn't have a roomate.

@ Darko. I need a 7'x10', which can get rather spendy. This one I saw though runs only $128 USD. I guess you have to shop around. And you know my current rug was a carpet remnant and I got it for only $125.

I have an old carpet too… :left: Now you made me start thinking….

I'm so glad that you and Tass have each other to "hang out" with, Edward. Looks like she's really good for you, and that you're good for her, too. Makes me wish my brother was around again.:heart:

@ Star. I wish he was Star. Any chance that he would be coming to visit soon? Do you keep in touch by email, etc? for ya. :)PS. You know I'm surprised you didn't say anything about the onion rings. 😆

Onions in any form are good. I love onions. Good thing I don't have to worry about onion breath because no one gets that close. I have a set of spare bed frames that I have no idea what to do with. I guess I could give them to S. Army, but not sure I could get them apart to load in the car. I have an organ in my spare bedroom I've been trying to find a way to get rid of for years. It's really heavy, non-playing, and I have no way to haul it off. I told my son to cut the sucker up into chunks and haul it off. So far, he hasn't seen fit to do that. So, I may take my circle saw to it. I do have an electric circle saw, a drill and a tool box full of smaller tools, plus a hacksaw and my two most useful tools—my staple gun and my portable/electric screwdriver. I can't do without those two tools and my duct tape.

@ Linda. PS. At last, we are finally getting into the onion rings. 😆
edwardpiercy said:
@ Linda. :lol:Are you sure the organ can't be fixed?Anyway, seems that somebody could come and haul it off. Might cost you an add in the newspaper though.

I like onion rings, Edward. Save me some. :DYeah, David and I keep in touch a bit. Kinda hard lately, though. He's been on the move in New Zealand, which was pretty lucky for him when that quake hit down there last week. The epicenter was only about 20 miles west of where he lives on the South Island, but he was on the North Island when it hit, so he was okay.@ Linda: The Salvation Army will sometimes pick up big or heavy items that you want to donate. Just give them a call and they might come and get all that stuff for you. 🙂

@ Star. Does he live in Tasmania? I like little, cheap, bite sized onion rings. Even though they don't taste as good as the big, $8 fancy restaurant onion rings. I guess I'm just an onion ring plebian. :lol:Oh and BTW I made a mistake in the money and my sis ended up buying the onion rings. :p

He lives in Christchurch on the South Island. Or did. Not sure where he's gonna live now.

He had sold his house in November last year, and had been staying with some friends until he went to the North Island just a few days before the quake. I've only been able to ascertain that he's okay, and haven't had the chance to talk to him long enough to find out any more details from him about his friends, his belongings, or anything. But last I heard, no one was killed, which was a miracle, considering the widespread damage.

At least some good news

Star, glad to hear David is OK. Hope you'll be able to give further news as you receive it. Star, S. Army and Goodwill have gotten to the point where they do not pick up non-working items. And you have to have some good stuff before they'll pick it up—and a lot of it. The times are a changin'

Edward, I checked into getting the organ fixed. No one in Tyler will work on it. The businesses who sell that brand, Kimball, won't work on it unless it was purchased from them. I finally was given the phone number of a man who works on all kinds of keyboards. He lives in Lufkin, which is about 60-80 miles from here. He goes to different towns to work on these things, but I was never able to get him to return a call, and besides, having to drive over a hundred miles round trip, you know he'd charge a Rockefeller fortune to do the work. Just isn't gonna happen.

Got email from Carol earlier. She's having the same problem. Got her computer up and running again, tried to log in to OC, hasn't been able to. Stinks to high heaven.
L2D2 said:
Yeah, I've been going through that all day long. I can't log out nor can I log into a different account. ALL DAY LONG. Chuck hasn't been able to get on OC since this morning, or maybe last night. Something terribly wrong with the access, login and logout functions of OC. I sure hope they get it fixed fast, although they have not fixed it for 24 hours just about. I can't even use the Opera browser except to surf the web. Can't use it for anything concerning Opera.

Organ donation…Please don't comment on that. It will only encourage me to further nonsense.;)
edwardpiercy said:
@ Linda.Maybe you could put an add in a local newspaper or Thrify Nickel or someshing, saying somethink like "free to good home, non-working Kimbal organ, you pick up." ????@ Martin.Well as we all know, some organs are bigger than others. :p@ Everyone.Just to experiment I logged out and then tried to log back in a few minutes ago. No problems whatsoever. Of course I've often run into some problem that I have that others don't have, so I guess that's not too unusual.Anyway, hope it all gets worked out soon. :wizard:
