George Washington and Franz Joseph Haydn
were both born in 1732.
You know it wasn't too long ago that on a 4th of
July weekend that I would have gotten together with
my girlfriend or other friends, possibly attended a
barbecue, heard a band, maybe gone to a good restaurant
for dinner and seen a movie. And in fact I would have
considered it a disappointing holiday if I hadn't done
at least some of those things.
But this weekend for our Nation's birthday I will do
none of that. Instead I plan to sit in front of the air
conditioner, sip on a few margaritas, and listen to
Haydn's "Paris" symphonies.
And for some reason that doesn't seem disappointing
at all.
How things change, yeah?
To my friends out there both in the States and else-
where, I wish you the continued blessings of Liberty
this holiday.

Interesting comparison that – considering Haydn was the last really great composer to have been a servant to the aristocracy most of his life, only becoming a free agent shortly after the American revolution.

That didn't occur to me, but very true. Well, at least he had a steady job. :p But I'm glad that towards the end of his life that he was able to take advantage of new freedoms and put a few dollars in his pocket, do some traveling.
I've never read a biography of Haydn. I wonder what he thought about the passing of the ancient regime?
Oh yeah! And not just an orchestra, but in a sense HIS orchestra.
Could very well have been like that.
I don't think he would missed it much. In his later years he was making a lot of money and doing pretty well for himself.
I don't Haydn, I how you at home, sit at computer during the holidays and not be disappointed. I drink tea. 🙂 Have a good time, Ed.
