I loved the Industrial Revolution segment of the 2012 Olympics opening
show. I especially loved the moment when the big booming voice came over
the loudspeakers announcing — "Workers! You have nothing to lose but
your chains!"
Okay that last thing didn't happen. :p
Still though, I got to thinking that without the sweat and certainly far
underpaid toil of all those 19th century workers that I wouldn't be
sitting here typing on a computer or talking on a cell phone. Even
though the Olympic show seemed to suggest chaos, history is an
ever-present flow of vectors. We today stand on the shoulders of all
those who labored and created before us. By ensuring that our people
today can make a decent living and be assured such basics as health
care and a good education, we do our part to help future generations
achieve a good life.
Good to read your general summing up.I cheered and celebrated with great delight the passing through my town of the Olympic torch. I posted clips from British newspapers about the games and I'm immensely proud of what our opening ceremony depicted. I can say from experience and for certain that in my country we have a national health service that is truly beneficial to all of us over here; has saved many lives that would not have been saved back in previous times; has prolonged lives, advanced longevity, that would not have been extended in previous times, pre-1948. We do indeed stand on the shoulders of all those who labored and created before us.I'm proud of Great Britain's contribution to that and as well to many other areas of endeavour .. and the display paid tribute to the British heritage in all of this.
I think there were certain political "leaders" here in the U.S. that probably choked on their popcorn when that National Health segment of the show came on.As I told our Opera friend Gary Denness on Facebook — You guys rock.
