The Guppy.
The youngest person to circumnavigate the globe single handedly in a sailboat is currently Dutch sailor Laura Dekker, who completed her 518-day trip at the age of 16. She was sailing the Guppy, an older style and slightly modified Jeanneau Gin Fizz ketch.
The oldest human to circumnavigate the globe is Minoru Saito of Japan, who completed his extremely difficult “wrong way around” (west to east) voyage at age 77. He did it in a custom 50’ sloop, the Shuten-dohji III.
This is what the nav station of a circumnavigator looks like (on the Guppy).
She being alone with her thoughts and courage for 518 days!
Thanks for this post Ed, Absolutely FASCINATING! Ciao, Carlo
I know — that’s a psychological endurance test also!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Best Wishes to you, Happy Thanksgiving!
At the age of 16 I didn’t know a s**t about life, not to mention sailing in a boat alone for 518 days. Not even for 5.18 minutes 😛
One need to be mentally stable and strong to do that. Even then it is not easy. It never is.
I couldn’t even drive a car yet at 16. Actually, still can’t drive a car. LOL
I kinda had to cheer for the old Japanese sailor. One for us old guys! 🙂
In Serbia, there is a saying: Nema udarca bez starca! which could be translated as: No one can punch like the old man! 🙂
Hells yeah. 😉😊
